Song of The Month – Bubble by Ani DiFranco

Okay – nevermind the fact that my last “song of the month” post was in January of 2020, heh. Uh, yeahhhh, maybe I can make this more of a regular thing??? Like say – oh, geez…. I dunno…. monthly? Heh heh! Can’t stand myself, yo. But I refuse to change the series title!

Introduction:

Ani DiFranco is the biggest female badass in music history. (Besides Tori Amos, Grace Slick and Dolly Parton, of course.)

Her album Educated Guess is the most badass album in her album catalogue, and her song “Bubble” is the most badass song in the entire Ani DiFranco song catalogue.

Just LISTEN to that acoustic guitar intro.   Listen to her beating the shit out of those chords.  Oooooh!

That deep bassy sound, almost a world-music sound.

This wonderful and exotic acoustic magic continues during various interludes through the song.

She goes quiet on that acoustic during the lyrics and then BOOM, here comes that bubble / air balloon acoustic guitar tearing across the sky.

Ooof, chills baby. And do you hear those fabulous harmonics toward the end?

A short while ago, I blasted this song on my stereo and turned the volume all the way up.  I listened to this song about 3 times in a row.

This song deserves to be played on an actual stereo, people, not your phone or through your shitty laptop speakers.

And listen to her sing!   Especially when she sings the chorus.   I want to eat her voice!   Yes, I want to jump into the speaker and eat that voice.

Heh.  People stumbling across this post will need to understand…. that… I am a very carnal and excitable person.

Especially where it concerns a song this damn good. I have these similar voice-eating feelings toward songs by Tori Amos and Grace Slick :). Something about those good female singing voices. Just wanna eat ’em up like Hershey chocolate kisses.

Jesus, it’s several hours later now… and I’m still tripping on this wonderful song after taking a break to do other things.

Lyrics to Bubble:

“I hated to pop the bubble
Of me and you
But it only held enough oxygen
For a trip or two

To the moon and back again
Tell me, do you remember when
Our love had such grace
We were floating above this whole place

It’s dawn on the corner
Where the city tests its squeaky breaks
Outside my bedroom window
A doppler muffler and a boomin bass

It’s dawn and the snow
Is turning on its deepest blue
So I go outside just to stand there and
Look at my hands against the color
I find I always return to

I want you to always remember for me
Baby, if you can
How much you hated the woman
Who made you a man

And remember for me won’t you
Back further before that
How you loved her like a boy
Cried from the joy
When you weren’t laughing

No, I hated to pop the bubble
Of me and you
But it only held enough oxygen
For a trip or two

To the moon and back again
Do you remember when
Our love had such grace
We were floating above this whole place

So I hear these days you too
Are trying your hand at sleeplessness
A few more dizzying doppler lovers
And then a booming loneliness

How innocent the young student
On the day school has begun
When I said this was what I wanted
Did you think I thought it would be fun?

No, I hated to pop the bubble
Of me and you
But it only held enough oxygen
For a trip or two

To the moon and back again
Oh but I remember when
Our love had such grace
We were floating above this whole place”
