Song of The Month – “Snap (If I Could)” – Smashing Pumpkins

This month’s song is “Snap (If I Could)”.

This song is by The Smashing Pumpkins from way back in 1989 before they became famous.

This song sounds nothing like other songs you might have heard on the radio in the 90’s by these guys.

You won’t find sweeping melodies, crushing guitar riffs, raging screams or psychedelia.

Instead, here we discover a very young band playing the laid-back, gothy, unapologetically 1980’s music they played when the band originally formed.

It’s a demo and it’s pretty low-fi.

However, it deserves good speakers and you should turn it up ALL THE WAY.

I love this song.

I’ve been obsessively playing the guitar parts on this lately.  It’s completely addictive.

This song is a prime example of why the band was destined to become famous; catchy guitar parts, top-notch craft, an enigmatic singer, the vulnerable “mystery boy” posturing.

It sounds kind of like The Cure and other popular fare of the times, but there’s something extra here.  There’s an additional layer of magic.

Listen to that moonlight. That moonlight quality carried over in a different form to many of their 90’s songs.

The lyrics are simple.

As with all good songs (at least for me) the music is what drives the story home.  The lyrics are just a guidepost.

I’m not above making fun of myself on this one. Okay.

I do love this song –  but I know it’s dorky.   This is perhaps the dorkiest song I love.

You can envision Molly Ringwald coming down the stairs in a dress while you listen.

It does have that quality.

Hey.  It was 1989.

Lyrics:

I’ll break someone, somewhere
To show how big I am
You know I’m not sorry
I’ll take everything

I wouldn’t give you
The time of day
You were my only
What can I say?

I’m not alone, no
‘Cause I’m not alone

You think I need a seer
To show me the way
I wouldn’t give you away
Away

I wouldn’t give you
The time of day
You were my only
What can I say?

‘Cause I’m not alone
